Give your confidence a boost with back to work shopping
While back to school shopping is on everybody’s mind in August, what about some back to work shopping to help you bounce back into the office with confidence and purpose?
Summer is a defined break for schools, but for many it is a natural break for work too with families, couples and friends heading off on summer holidays that give them the space they need to think about their career or to refresh and recharge.
Second only to the New Year in terms of starting with a blank canvas, the summer break is a good time to make a change or step it up at work – and to make sure you have the work wardrobe that gives you the confidence to do that.
Would you feel better greeting a new client or asking for a pay rise in modern, well-fitting, smart clothes or in that slightly too tight shirt you’ve been making do with for the past five years? The answer is obvious. Treat yourself the way that you want to be treated.
Back to work shopping: Update your wardrobe
Like it or not, you spend a lot of time at work, so don’t begrudge spending money on work clothes. Instead make sure that while you are at work you feel good about what you are wearing.
After a couple of years of working remotely, it could be that your standards have slipped and comfort has been king. Yet whether your office is a casual or smart place, you might want to consider updating your look with a few key pieces.
The good news about a work wardrobe is that a capsule wardrobe will go a long way, so focus on investing in a few key pieces that will serve you well.
Think carefully about what colours you want to wear so that outfits can be mixed and matched seamlessly. Are you a fan of dark clothes or do you favour a pop of colour? Take some time to choreograph colours and styles that match to save you money – and time – when putting outfits together in the long run.
Build a capsule work wardrobe
Chose well-fitting basics that can be mixed and matched to create a number of different looks and outfits. Including:
Shirts – Choose several shirts. Neutral colours are ideal for maximum wearability, however, if you want to add a dash of personality to your work wardrobe, colourful shirts can be contrasted with neutral trousers, skirts and jackets.
Jacket/ Coat – Invest well here for a jacket that will look great every day and complement a range of outfits. In a more traditional office a trench coat makes a good option, but you may prefer a denim or leather jacket in a creative or casual environment.
Trousers/ Skirts – Choose a couple of smart skirts or pairs of trousers that will form the base for an outfit and can be dressed up with a shirt and jacket. Choose dark or light neutrals to ensure they complement the other items in your wardrobe.
Jumpers – Choose two smart woollen jumpers that can be worn either alone or under a jacket for cooler days.
Suit – If you need to attend meetings a suit is a wise addition to step up your smartness, it also widens your capsule wardrobe, allowing the jacket and trousers or skirt to be mixed with other outfits.
Shoes – Choose a couple of pairs of comfortable, quality shoes that will look good with the items in your wardrobe. Visualise them with each outfit. If you can get away with trainers at work, add a pair of those in, but also choose smart shoes and consider boots or flats. Again dark neutrals or nude shades will give maximum wearability.
Bag – Women may want to choose a couple of bags to match workwear outfits but make sure they are practical and work with the colour patterns within your work wardrobe. For men a classic brown leather satchel or a black canvas backpack will work well with most outfits.
The most important considerations when building a capsule wardrobe when back to work shopping is to ensure that everything fits well and that the colours complement each other. If you want to stamp your personality on your work outfit, focus on the accessories.
