Easter Traditions and Activities to Enjoy this March with Family and Friends
Pretty pastel colours and chocolatey treats dominate retail shelves as people prepare for the next big school holiday in the annual calendar. Easter is almost here!
While the traditional meaning of Easter is rooted in Christianity, modern interpretations of the annual celebration are springtime festivities, relaxation, and indulgence in chocolate treats.
Easter Traditions
Easter traditions commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The period is considered the most important feast in the Christian calendar, symbolising hope, renewal, and salvation. For Christians, Easter represents the triumph of life over death and the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
For many, attending a church service with family and friends or participating in special Easter masses, hymns, and sermons will be a staple Easter Sunday tradition.
The Easter Bunny
Today, the Easter Bunny is a prominent figure in Easter celebrations worldwide. In Western cultures, a friendly rabbit is often the bearer of chocolate, sweets and coloured eggs of all shapes and sizes to children.
The origin of the Easter Bunny can be traced back to ancient pagan spring festivals. In Germanic cultures, the goddess Eostre was associated with fertility and the arrival of spring. The hare was also a symbol of fertility and new life in pagan traditions. The hare and rabbit are also known for their prolific breeding habits. When Christianity spread throughout Europe, many pagan customs and symbols were incorporated into Christian holidays.
In German folklore, the ‘Osterhase’ or Easter Hare tradition emerged in the 16th century. It was a period when children would make nests for the hare to lay coloured eggs. Over time, this tradition evolved into the concept of the Easter Bunny delivering eggs and goodies to children on Easter Sunday.
Easter Traditions and Activities to Enjoy this March
There are plenty of ways families can celebrate Easter traditions and activities this March, depending on traditions, beliefs, and preferences. Here at Marriotts Walk, we’ve come up with a list of ways families and friends can enjoy the springtime festivities.
Easter egg hunts
Organising an Easter egg hunt is popular for families with young children. Choose your home or garden (or both) and hide colourful eggs filled with treats or small toys. Combining a treasure hunt with questions and clues creates abundant family fun as children embark on their egg hunt. Many local parks, woodland areas or tourist spots, such as National Trust or Wildlife Trust sites, will offer free or paid egg hunts.
Decorating eggs
Spend time together decorating eggs with dyes, paints, stickers, or other creative materials. This activity can be mindful or excitable and allows for artistic expression. Use the festooned eggs as beautiful Easter decorations around the house.
Easter brunch or dinner
Gather with family and friends for a special meal on Easter Sunday. Good times are had over a hearty meal, whether it’s a brunch or a traditional dinner.
Baking Easter treats
Choose traditional recipes and spend a morning or afternoon baking Easter-themed treats. Examples include hot cross buns, bunny-shaped shortbread, chocolate brownies or an Easter cake. Fun time in the kitchen is a delicious activity for children and adults!
Outdoor activities
Enjoy the beauty of springtime and the hope and renewal it signifies with outdoor activities. Plan a family picnic or nature walk, or visit local parks and gardens to appreciate flowers, animals, fresh air and movement benefits.
Giving back
Easter is also a time for giving and serving others. Learn more about volunteering opportunities in your area and get together with family and friends at a local charity. There are plenty of community service projects to participate in and help those in need, from litter picks, food banks, charity walks or challenges, or conservation.
Crafts and games
There are many Easter-themed crafts and games to get stuck into. How about making paper bunnies, creating Easter bonnets, or playing pin the tail on the bunny? Sharing the fun of a simple card, board game, or storytelling is as enjoyable as creating something new.
Spending quality time together as a family, whether through religious observances, festive activities, or acts of kindness and generosity, is what Easter is all about.
