Underwear Trends this Summer – Who’d Have Thought?

Underwear trends don’t gain as much exposure as workwear, outdoor clothing or casual fashion. But these garments are essential pieces that we wear every day.

While it’s probably true to say a lady’s undergarment wardrobe is more trend-worthy than a man’s, there’s still a lot to consider for all shapes, sizes and desires.

Underwear as Outerwear – Really?

Yes. It seems appropriate to mention a catwalk trend that appears to be showing underwear as outerwear. The Superman look is here, although the style has been observed more with the ladies. Coupling shorts and knickers of all colours, materials, and skimpy sizes with suit jackets, tucked-in shirts, oversized coats, tights, or leggings are the look. Another ‘hot look’ is the sleek, translucent dress that reveals prominent lingerie.

While this divergent trend might be a little too flamboyant for the high street masses, there are some fabulous, tasteful styles to pick up on as summer approaches.

Lace and Mesh

Following a similar theme to footwear and eveningwear, 2024 is the year for lace, mesh, satin and silk. The choice is abundant in tailored cutwork and embellishment. There are also lots of delicate tones and shapes that enhance an overall eternal vibe.

Wireless Bras

While everyone won’t love this trend, wireless bras could be said to offer a more natural choice for ‘intimate carriages’. This summer, choose from popular lace, mesh, vibrant colours and floral designs.

Bright Colours

Think exotic flowers, outlandish cocktails, mocktails, or tropical fish, and you can’t go wrong. Bold oranges, turquoises, canary yellows, reds and pinks are all strong colour contenders for your underclothes. Beautiful floral prints are also gaining real estate on the hangers.

Shades of White

Like black, white is a timeless shade and a must-have classic for many. Plenty of materials, patterns, and hues exist for white undies this season – just don’t mix them with your black denim!

Floral Displays

As spring and summer are full of bloom, it makes sense that floral shades and patterns are demanding attention. And colourful flowers are not restricted to material prints. Lace, satin, and cotton embellishment are prominent features that add a luxurious stamp.

Back to Basics

Of course, sustainable fabrics and close-to-skin comfort will always be on-trend. Undie packs of cosy cotton, durable polyamide or nylon are always available. Cherry-pick neutral colours, pale patterns and your favourite shapes.

Men’s Undies

Female lingerie always gains coverage over male undies. But this doesn’t mean the trends are eliminating the fellas. Trunks are the top choice this year – a midway variant between boxers and briefs – offering excellent support and proportion due to a shorter fit. Bold colours include greens, pinks, yellows, and purples.

There’s also a choice of material. Cotton (with a tad per cent of elastane) is still formidable, but polyester spandex for breathability and soft lyocell for silky texture are popular alternatives.
